Chinese Language & Culture Acquisition
• Learn through and about Chinese throughout the day, happily and richly immersed in songs, stories, finger play, parallel and group play.
• By the end of the year, students will have explored their surroundings through Chinese language and will have responded to and made requests appropriate to the context.
Pre-School students will:
• Sing, recite poems and nursery rhymes, and dramatize stories in Chinese.
• Be immersed in stories and texts, and learn to express their feelings and ideas using a combination of writing, drawing, writing, crafting, and dictation methods.
Pre-Kindergarten students will:
• Learn to speak Chinese with native or near-native accent and tones.
• Understand and respond to school rules and classroom routines.
• Carry out conversations within a familiar and meaningful context.
• Understand the main idea of a new story, and repeat key elements in the story.
• Describe familiar events using words and simple sentences.
Kindergarten students will:
• Speak Chinese with native or near-native accent and tones
• Learn to understand verbal communication within semi-familiar to unfamiliar context.
• Learn to understand the key elements of a new story and retell the story with prompting and support
• Master a vocabulary of high frequency of approximately 300 to 800 words.
• Form good reading habits and enjoy reading.
• Recognize 50-100 characters and read simple phrases and texts with comprehension.
• Follow appropriate handwriting skills and stroke order when writing characters.
• Engage in inquiry-based writing projects.
